Beyond the regulatory constraint related to the Nitrates Directive, in particular, which makes winter soil cover mandatory, the establishment of cover crops offers numerous agronomic, pedological, environmental and economic advantages.
Cover crops provide ecosystem services and are fully in line with an agro-ecological transition approach. In particular, they reduce the use of inputs such as mineral nitrogen and improve soil fertility (by increasing organic matter content and reducing erosion). Concurrently, covers reduce the leaching of nitrates into groundwater and constitute significant carbon sinks through biomass production.
However, this recent and still relatively unstructured requires support to be implemented correctly.
OUR SOLUTION
A tool for valuing
cover crops
Pixagri Cover Crops is a tool for valuing cover crops, designed for farmers, agricultural cooperatives, seed companies, and other actors in the agricultural sector. The tool allows estimating and monitoring the biomass of a cover by satellite imagery and quantifying the mineral elements (nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium) stored and then released back into the soil after destruction.
This service is based on the MERCI method (Method of Estimation of cover crops restitutions), developed by the Regional Chamber of Agriculture of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. To avoid manual and time-consuming biomass weighings, we automate and enrich the model by estimating biomass using spatial data.
Thanks to the MERCI method, satellite images, and cover crops management data (species, sowing and destruction dates, soil type), we obtain reliable information for monitoring your winter cover crops.
